The Rolled-Ribbon Battery Company was founded, and its Rolled-Ribbon® technologies were developed, for the specific purpose of addressing the need for higher-performance high-power high-capacity Li-ion batteries. The company designs and manufactures cells and batteries for customers based on its Rolled-Ribbon® technologies at its facilities in Austin, Texas, USA.

Cylindrical, pouch, and prismatic cells were developed for relatively low-power low-capacity battery requirements. Since then, battery applications have evolved and new battery applications have emerged, which require batteries with ever increasing power and capacity. When cylindrical, pouch and prismatic cells were scaled up to meet the demands, technical issues emerged that have become difficult or impossible to solve. Impedances increase. Energy conversion efficiencies decrease. Thermal issues arise. The severity of these issues continues to increase with increased scaling.

Rolled-Ribbon® is technology that decreases electrical and thermal impedances in cells and batteries. Its effectiveness scales up with the cells. As a result, Rolled-Ribbon® cells and batteries increase power delivery, decrease heat generation, and provide unparalleled thermal performance. Further, the novel physical structure of Rolled-Ribbon® enables the construction of rugged, durable cells that are “tough-as-nails”. They enable the construction of flexible, modular, rugged, and durable stacked-cell-blocks that don’t require welding. Since the cell blocks don’t require welding, cells can be replaced (i.e., cell blocks can be serviced) and cells can be repurposed (i.e., redeployed from one cell block to another). Finally, Rolled-Ribbon® technology and its associated thermal performance enables the design of efficient thermal management systems.
